Dear Michael,
I think of myself as
having lived many, interesting lives. I have
done many things and have always found ways
to keep stretching my professional
possibilities.
I believe that we
become what we think about. We don’t roll
around in the doldrums, even though the real
estate market is much slower than it once
was. At this point in my life, I feel I’m at
the pinnacle of the mountain and only good
things can follow, so I am, again, trying to
put my resources to the best possible use.
In 1966 I left my home
in upstate New York to enlist in the Army
---which, in the minds and hearts of some,
was a rather unpopular thing to do,
especially at one of the most politically
turbulent times in the history of our
country.
My Army career lasted
another twenty years. I served in Vietnam
from 1968-69, became a sergeant; was drafted
for Officer Candidate School and in 1980,
got out as a Major and worked at the
Pentagon. In 1986 Hughes Aircraft offered me
a job, but I knew it would be more of what I
had already done, this time, in a business
suit.
I wanted to be a
civilian so I got my real estate license and
I have been in the business for twenty-one
years. I had success selling “pre-Internet”
real estate in northern Virginia for fifteen
of those twenty-one years, made decent money
and subsequently, always seemed to find
myself drawn to new selling opportunities.
Today, I have no desire
to retire, I love real estate and I want to
re-emerge. I’ve followed your messages---and
you---when it was geographically possible---
for many years. When I bought your initial
book, “ePower Pro”, (2001 edition), I was
motivated to take my first stab at writing
an ePRO Certification course.
I’ve always thought
that it was the way to go and I have never
taken that book off my desk! The reason for
that is that the premise is still valid;
that the Internet Empowered Consumer (IEC)
really does exist and continues to exhibit
the qualities you say they possess…and they
do!
The information in that
book, in addition to the other countless
positive principles you speak on, spurred a
challenge for me to create a lucrative
target market.
While it is still in
the planning stages, an additional target
market will embrace “vets” from all sectors
of military service---Army, Navy guys come
down here who haven’t forgotten their past
histories; retired New York/New Jersey cops
and firefighters come down here… and others.
I’ve learned that figuring out your “niche”
specificity and the need it meets or
creates, can be an inherent part of future
success. I was inspired, again, by your
recent Master’s course in Orlando, where I
was exposed to REALTOR® websites that target
specific markets in just those ways.
One of the most
humorous and direct messages you gave at
that event was the example of the guy who
worried that if everybody and his brother
had a website, he would get lost in the
pile. You thought about his dilemma and
replied, “So, your logic is that if
everybody else is in the phone book, you
should take your name out?” The example
here, of course, was that he should figure
out how to have the best listing in the
phone book.
It isn’t often that a
marketing specialist, such as yourself, says
things like, “Are you doing what you were
born to do?” In my mind, that translates
into, “are you pursuing a calling versus a
career?” And, if they are one and the same
thing, you’re way ahead of the game.
So, why is this time
different for me than others? I have seen
the face of real estate change dramatically
in the last twenty or so years. There was a
time when people dabbled in it, part-time.
Today, many are coming into real estate,
from other careers, including many college
grads in their early to mid twenties.
The business has the
potential to be exciting because of
technology and marketing savvy. I embrace
it. I enjoy seeing people becoming cyber
geeks in their old age!
I’ve been to all kinds
of seminars, but today, right now, in this
market, I’m putting all my eggs in one
basket, based on what I’ve learned from you.
I also “won” a
complimentary copy of
The Obsolete Employee at the Orlando
event. Just this past week, I hired my first
VA! This is yet another chapter in my life!
The possibilities are endless!
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Frank Zedar
